God divided time into days and nights; and we’ll have experiences of brightness and experiences of darkness. When we experience grief, confusion, sadness, uncertainty; when our hearts feel broken and the familiar life we knew seems to have tumbled down; all of these can be times of darkness. And because we can’t see clearly in the dark, it’s easy to wonder if God is really there with us. Without doubt, He is! The Israelites faced their greatest challenge with Pharaoh’s armies behind them and the Red Sea in front of them. But the Bible says, ‘All that night the Lord drove the sea back’ (Exodus 14:21 NIV). Be encouraged; God’s at work even when we can’t see Him. George Matheson, a composer of hymns, wrote: ‘Will I remain in God’s house at night…love Him for who He is…desire not the gift but the giver? When I can remain…during the darkness of night and worship…I’ve accepted Him for Himself alone.’ We shouldn’t only turn to God when we need a miracle; instead,we should focus on our relationship with Him and we’ll get just what we need exactly when we need it. Jesus said, ‘If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you’ (John 15:7 NKJV). After Elihu lost everything near and dear to him, he said to his friend Job, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, who teaches us…and makes us wiser?’ (Job 35:10-11 NKJV). Jesus said, ‘What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight’ (Matthew 10:27 NIV). In the darkness, God is still with us, stabilising, supporting, and strengthening us.
