Mission Is Action

The Great Commission: Mission Is Action

In Matthew 28:16–20, we hear the final words of Jesus before His ascension — words we now know as the Great Commission. But before that charge was given, extraordinary events had already unfolded.

The resurrection itself — the greatest event in history — is recorded in verses 1–8. In verses 9–10, Jesus appears to the two Marys. Imagine their awe as they realised the risen Lord stood before them. Then in verses 11–15, we read of one of the greatest cover-ups ever attempted: soldiers bribed to claim that the disciples had stolen His body during the night.

And yet, even after all these miraculous and world-changing events, the story points us to something greater still: Jesus’ final charge to His followers.

Before returning to the Father, He told the Marys to gather His brothers. He wanted to meet with them. And when they came, He gave His last instruction — not to sit quietly, not to wait passively, but to go.

“Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19)

The Great Commission is about movement. It’s about action. It is not a suggestion, but a command — and it applies to every follower of Christ.

When Jesus could have spoken about His pain and betrayal, He chose instead to leave His disciples with one final charge: Go.

The question is not whether the Great Commission still matters — it does. The question is: What has God called you to do? And will you go?

Our latest edition of Word for Today is based on the theme ‘Go’. Every quarter it reaches over 25,000 people in print — and thousands more digitally. We want to expand that reach even further. Can you help us?
