There are so many things in God’s creation that point to His greatness and power, and show how amazingly He organised the world around us. Let’s think about one of them: the water cycle. It doesn’t sound very exciting at first, but let’s take a look at it more closely. The water cycle wasn’t fully understood by scientists until the seventeenth century, yet the Bible has some verses that give pretty accurate descriptions of it. The writer of Ecclesiastes noted: ‘All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again’ (Ecclesiastes 1:7 NIV). Amos the prophet said, ‘He…calls the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth’ (Amos 9:6 NKJV). And Job’s friend Elihu said, ‘How great is God – beyond our understanding!…He draws up the drops of water, which distil as rain to the streams; the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers pour on mankind’ (Job 36:26-28 NIV). When it rains, we tend to moan and complain about it, forgetting the complex process that had to take place for it to happen. The amount of water at the earth’s surface stays quite constant – if it didn’t, the earth would’ve quickly flooded and we’d have all drowned long ago – and it’s kept that way by God’s amazing creation of the water cycle. We often take for granted how creative God is, and how He can solve problems that we can’t even begin to fix. But when we look at the world around us and really think about the intricate details of God’s creation, we get a small glimpse into His immense power. So we can confidently ask Him to help us in any situation, knowing that nothing is too much for Him.
