Let’s take a look at the first part of Isaiah 40:22: ‘God sits above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to him!’ (NLT). The word circle is translated from the Hebrew word chuwg, which can also be translated as circuit or compass. It suggests a picture of God encompassing the entire world, watching over it. Then in the second part of the verse, it says, ‘He spreads out the heavens like a curtain and makes his tent from them’ (NLT). We can’t really begin to grasp the extent of God’s power, greatness, and care, but this verse helps to give us some idea of how immense it is. When we look up at the vast expanse of the sky above us, it can make us feel small and insignificant (just like the grasshoppers in Isaiah 40:22). It’s almost impossible for us to process the thought of something so big. But God created it and has the power to treat it like a curtain or a tent. It isn’t too big or too powerful for Him. And even though we ‘seem like grasshoppers’ and might feel insignificant, we matter to God. Luke 12 puts it like this: ‘Five sparrows are sold for only two pennies, and God does not forget any of them…Don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows’ (vv. 6-7 NCV). So whenever we go to Him with a problem or a worry that’s been playing on our mind, even if it seems too big for us, it isn’t too big for God. And if we think it’s too small to bother God with, it isn’t too small for Him to care about. So we can confidently take all our problems, worries and praise to our great God.
