Children trust their parents. They trust that they’ll be looked after and guided to do the right things. As we get older, we can begin to feel differently about direction. We can start to think that we don’t need other people’s help and can view guidance as interference. We want to be independent and solve everything ourselves. So, when it comes to direction from God, the One who can give us the best guidance, we need to have a childlike mind-set. We need to go back to trusting and being accepting of guidance. We need to be open to Him and trust that He’s guiding us the right way rather than resenting His direction. After all, we’re trusting a God who never fails and never makes a mistake in the ways He leads us. God says: ‘”For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts”’ (Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV). God directs us into His plans, plans that are far better than any we could create ourselves. These plans come from God wanting the best for us and Him having His ‘loving eye’ on us. And when we trust God and follow Him, wherever He leads us, the Bible tells us that ‘whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it”’ (Isaiah 30:21 NIV). That’s so much better than when we go our own way.

What Now?
Think of a decision you need to make. Spend time asking God for His guidance about it. Have a pen and some paper ready to write down anything you feel He’s saying to you.
