Let’s take this meditate-percolate idea a step further. (If you’re a tea drinker, you can substitute the word ‘brew’ if you prefer!) Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the thought that we don’t have the time or the discipline, there’s nothing wrong with easing yourself into meditation. It’s not a case of ‘give it your all or do nothing at all’. Take small steps. If you only have ten minutes to spare, make every one of them count. You don’t have to read ten chapters of your Bible – it’s not like doing a book report for school, and you’re not going to be tested. Read this verse and it will help you: ‘But the word of the Lord was to them, “precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little”’ (v.13 NKJV). Whether you have ten minutes or ten hours, God’s Word is so rich with detail and truth that you can take one phrase, or even one idea, and let it percolate and brew in your mind. Instead of watching TV or constantly scrolling through social media, just sit still with your favourite comforting hot drink, and let God’s Spirit within you interpret, enlarge, and enrich His Word as you turn it over in your mind. Think about it during your journey home, or over lunch, or during a break. Some days you’ll feel like you’ve hit the jackpot spiritually; other days you’ll just feel like you’ve added a little more to your basic Bible knowledge. Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re coming away with nothing particularly new, but an idea that you may have forgotten has been reaffirmed. The key is consistency – do this for one year, and you’ll end up with 365 scriptural insights to draw on. Just imagine the difference that could make!
